When It Comes To Buying Dresses...

I can’t help myself. When I stumble upon beauties hanging on a rack or listed online I’m a non-stop consumer. My friends and family insist I don’t need to add more dresses to my already overstuffed closet—and I don’t—but if I’m going to keep shopping, I may as well get practical items that can serve multiple purposes. Out with the old, in with the new!

The best dresses for you and me are ones that can be worn appropriately at different events and with accessories you already own to maximize usage and turn “yet another purchase” into a real investment piece.

We are all familiar with the LBD, (little black dress) but with there being an accepted abbreviation, this known classic can become too stale and expected. A fresher way to pull off a class act look is with a navy dress.

Everyone Looks Good in Navy!

It’s nearly as easy to wear as black but never appears gothic or dour.

The regal color suits all ages and is still visually slimming the way black is. Work the rhinestones, ruching, lace and sequins; with a navy background the embellishments just make whichever style you choose more remarkable.

While nearly any blue is an easier hue to pull off than say, mint or electric lime, you still need to know how to get the most out of it. Follow our guide for tips on matching your shoes to your dress, and you’ll learn how you can look lovely with just two steps.

1st Do

Navy Formal Dress

Steve Madden, Sillly, $79.95 – 3” heel. Available Here

Rich and elegant, navy makes a perfect pair with luxurious gold, especially when the “something blue” is a sophisticated, long gown or snazzy cocktail dress and the gold is represented in glittering footwear.

Gold adds a youthful illumination to bring out the best from the dark shade. If your dress is already accented with silver you can try that as a substitute, but we quite like the way the top medal (metal) matches the grand midnight hue.

We recommend a closed or open-toe high heel, but if you’re dancing the night away you may want to try a metallic ballet flat. A cascading chiffon dress will also look whimsical with a feminine flat.

Navy Sundress

What color shoes to wear with a navy dress? Orange, if its casual

Nordstrom, Lanvin, Espadrille Wedge Sandal, $690– 4.5” heel, Available Here

Since navy is an unconventionally dark choice for a sundress, you’ll want to perk it up with pops of brights. Because orange is its color wheel opposite and contrasting colors make great combinations, we recommend the vibrant color as number one.

We like a simple two or three strap sandal with a wedge or very low heel. Anything high will look silly and outdated, anything too strappy will make an unappealing mix.

Yellow also looks pretty with navy and adds a sunny touch. Try a dress with something fun and girlie like a scalloped hem or eyelet fabric.

Navy Business Sheath

Top Shop, Gemini2 Patent Court Shoes, $70– 4.5” heel, Available Here

Show them that navy means business with a simple dress can go from work and networking to cocktails. Due to the modest nature of the dress we prefer a neutral color.

Many people still think black clashes with navy, but the color looks divine with matte or patent nude. Match the shade of your skin-tone or stockings with your pumps to score legs for days.

We prefer a closed-back high heel option, platform optional.

Navy Dresses

Navy Weekend Dress

Macy’s, Sperry Top-Sider, Clinton Bootie, $130 -- .75” heel, Available Here

A drawstring waist, terry cloth fabric or a short button-down—let that give you an idea of what a weekend dress might look like in this color palette.

We picture these dress to be short and sweet, complemented by a hobo bag or a cross body style. In the fall or winter we prefer tall riding boots that hit at or slightly above the knee. Heeled boots may look a bit awkward because the objective is to look fashionably casual.

In slightly warmer climates you can also try low booties, these look especially cute in a Western style with a slight point-toe and decorative stitch work. Choose from leather or suede. The best color for any boot with navy is brown. You can decide the specific shade based on the style and any secondary tones.

In the warmer months low-shaft booties are also a popular and appeasing choice. It’s a great look for an outdoor concert in the summertime, but if you not a boot girl or live in too hot a climate, then we recommend gray or brown espadrilles. This year it won’t be hard to find both wedges and flat slip-ons, a can-do for anyone who experiences foot pair.
